BOTOX® is a household name for a reason – it’s an effective, non-surgical solution for smoothing lines like crow’s feet and forehead furrows. This product and similarly formulated options called Xeomin® and Jeuveau can revitalize and refresh your look without incisions, sutures, or scarring.
Though it’s a straightforward treatment, you’ll still need to follow some instructions for the best results. Here are our top BOTOX® aftercare and recovery do’s and don’ts.
Do:
Relax for the Rest of the Day
Since BOTOX® injections don’t require any recovery, you won’t have to take time off work if you don’t want to. However, we suggest using the rest of your day to destress and focus on your self-care. Remember to stay in a standing or sitting position for at least four hours; bending or lying down might spread the toxin and promote bruising.
Leave the Treated Area Alone
BOTOX® takes a few days to settle into your muscles and begin taking effect. During this time, you may feel tempted to rub or pick at the injection site, but it’s a best practice to leave your face alone. Also, to minimize the chances of accidentally putting pressure on your face while you’re asleep, try your best to sleep on your back with your head elevated. This position will help resolve side effects like swelling and bruising more quickly.
Know When to See a Doctor
Though severe side effects are rare with BOTOX® when you choose a knowledgeable provider, call our office for immediate attention if you have difficulty speaking or swallowing or experience any muscle weakness or vision changes.
Do Not:
Drink Alcohol
Alcohol is a blood thinner, so we ask that you abstain from drinking any alcoholic beverages for 24 hours before and after getting BOTOX® injections.
Exercise
If exercise is part of your usual routine, skip your daily workout for at least 24 hours. Physical activity elevates your heart rate and increases blood flow, which might cause BOTOX® to migrate away from the injection site, reducing its effectiveness and increasing the risk of bruising.
Wear Makeup
If you received a BOTOX® injection in your face, take a break from makeup and exfoliating products for 24 hours. Pulling or rubbing your skin to apply these products could disperse the BOTOX® to unintended areas.
Spend Time Outdoors
After BOTOX®, stay indoors for at least four hours – for extra safety, don’t go outside for at least 24 to 48 hours. The sun’s heat can make your skin flushed and increase your blood pressure, which may encourage bruising. It’s also best to avoid other forms of heat exposure, such as taking a hot shower or bath.
